Quality, health, safety and environment
Waste, fuel handling and vessel discharges follow the rules of the port and the flag, not the fastest route through them.
Environment
Waste reception, sludge, black water and hazardous material are handled through the facilities the port designates, with the receipts that go with them. Where a port’s reception capacity is inadequate for what a vessel needs to discharge, that is established before arrival rather than discovered alongside.
Fuel handling follows the loading port’s rules and the vessel’s own procedures. Spill response arrangements are confirmed as part of the nomination, not assumed.
Fuel quality
Fuel is supplied against a stated specification, with sampling witnessed at the point of delivery and samples retained. Where a test fails, the retained sample settles the matter rather than the supplier’s own certificate. This is a quality control, but it is also a safety one: an off-specification fuel in a turbine is not a commercial problem.
Safety
Subcontractors are selected on capability as well as price, and a contractor whose method statement does not survive a reading is not engaged because it was cheapest. Lifting, confined space work and hazardous material movement are the areas where this is tested most often.
Incident reporting
Incidents are reported upward, including the ones that cost us time and money to report. An incident that was concealed is worth less than nothing, because it removes the only chance to fix the cause before it recurs on someone else’s operation.
Near misses are recorded on the same basis. The measure of whether this works is not the incident count, which can be lowered by not reporting, but whether the same cause appears twice.
Certification
We do not describe ourselves as certified, approved or accredited where no certification exists. When one is in place, this page will name the standard, its scope, the issuing body and the year, and the certification section of the site will appear with it.
